Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, a Mexican boxing superstar, is set to participate in the 2023 American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe from July 12-16 and is already receiving criticism for not focusing on fighting.
Alvarez, 32, is schedueld to fight Jermell Charlo on September 30 and boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya feels like golfing is a waste of time, telling FightHype that the undispute world champion is too old to not be focused.
"Canelo is an old 33 [years of age]. Not because he's been in wars, but he started professional when he was 15. If you're not focused on just training and taking care of business, and now you're golfing. It takes a lot out of you.
"You're out there six hours swinging the club, you're walking. You're not resting your body to go to war against somebody."
Alvarez has become an avid golfer over the past few years and has already competed in several celebrity charity matches.
Canelo Alvarez's competition
While Canelo is almost always the favorite when he steps inside a ring, he will be just another man in the bunch on the golf course.
NFL legend Tony Romo has already won three editions of the annual celebrity charity tournament and is the favorite to come out on top once again.
NBA superstar Stephen Curry and NFL champion Patrick Mahomes will also be competing alongside Alvarez.
The full list of celebrities in the American Century Championship also includes NBA legend Charles Barkley.
